{{/presale}}The latest design in the Big Five Series from the South African Mint is available with the image of the endangered rhinoceros. The African continent is home to two of the five subspecies living today: the white rhino and the black rhino. The black rhino is considered endangered and has just one-fifth of the wild population of its cousin the white rhino. Now, the species is the focus of the midpoint in the Big Five Series. Provident Metals now offers the 2020 South African Big Five Rhino 1 oz Silver Coin to you for purchase online.
Highlights:
When you purchase the 2020 South African Big Five Rhino 1 oz Silver Coin in this product listing, the item you receive is packaged individually inside of a presentation card and blisterpack. The coin is securely sealed in the blisterpack and the presentation card comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and details on both the rhinoceros species and the Big Five Series.
Obverse
A rhinoceros is found in the center of the obverse field of the 2020 South African Big Five Rhino 1 oz Silver Coin. The two rhinoceros species that live on the African continent actually consist of six subspecies in total between the white rhino and the black rhino. Both species can reach weights of upwards of 5,000 lbs., with male white rhinos representing the heaviest among the species, though its black rhino counterpart can also reach average weights around 4,000 lbs.
Reverse
Two rhinos stand closely together in the reverse design of the 2020 South African Big Five Rhino Silver Coin. In the center of the field is a circle that contains inscriptions of Five Rand, 1 oz, Ag 999.
History
The white rhino species is split into two subspecies of its own: southern white and northern white. The southern white rhino is the most populous species of rhino in the world with 20,400 members alive in the wild. The northern white rhino is the single most endangered in the world with just two living females in captivity. The black rhino, as a whole, is also endangered, has four subspecies that include the south-central, south-western, east-African, and west-African. Black rhino population numbers dropped dramatically in the second half of the 20th century from 70,000 in the 1960s to just 2,410 in 1995. Poaching was, and continues to be, a great threat to the long-term population of rhinos.
