{{/presale}}Fossil remains suggest that the African continent was once home to as many as six distinct species of elephants. Today, only the African bush elephant and African forest elephant remain on the continent. The former is the focus of the Bavarian State Mints African Wildlife Series of silver coins for Somalia and offers new designs of the bush elephant each year. Right now, you can get the 2020 Somalia Elephant 10 oz Silver Coin online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
African elephants were first recorded in written scientific descriptions by Johann Friedrich Blumenbach in 1797. The original means of distinguishing between the elephant species alive at the time was the shape of the enamel of the molar teeth, with African elephants having different shapes than Asian elephants. Today, the African bush elephant and forest elephant can easily be differentiated by skull size and shape. Bush elephants have wider skulls with a convex forehead compared to the narrower skull and concave forehead of the forest elephant.
Obverse
The obverse of all 2020 Somalia Elephant coins features the coat of arms for the Somali Republic. The crowned shield in the center features a background of horizontal lines with a single star in the center. The shield is supported by a leopard on either side. Somali Republic is engraved above with the date mark split on either side of the shield as 20 and 20. Below the shield is an inscription of the face value in Shillings.
Reverse
On the reverse of 2020 Somalia Elephant 10 oz Silver Coins is the image of African bush elephants with Mount Kilimanjaro. Here, you see combinations of the largest items on the African content. With male bull African bush elephants standing at 13.3 feet tall at the shoulders and weighing as much as 13,000 pounds, the bush elephant is by far the largest land mammal in the world. Mount Kilimanjaro is Africas highest mountain peak.
