{{/presale}}The Bavarian State Mint issues the Somalia Elephant coins of the African Wildlife Series on an annual basis. The coins shifted to Somalia from Zambia in 2004 and boast new designs of the African bush elephant species on the reverse side each year. Right now, you can buy the 2020 Somalia Elephant 1/25 oz Gold Coin online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The world has just three elephant species still alive today. Two of those living species exist on the African continent. The African bush elephant and African forest elephant have shared ancestors dating back millions of years, but diverged from one another as recently as 2.5 million years ago. Today, the African bush elephant is the largest, heaviest mammal in the world and the African forest elephant is the third-largest mammal. Both species have grey skin, large ears, and long tusks as identifying characteristics.
Obverse
The Somali coat of arms is depicted on the obverse of 2020 Somalia Elephant 1/25 oz Gold Coins. The national seal includes a crowned shield with a single star against a background field of horizontal lines. The shield is supported by a leopard on either side and has crossed fern leaves and spears below. Inscriptions include Somali Republic, 2020, and 50 Shillings.
Reverse
2020 Somalia Elephant 1/25 oz Gold Coins feature a new image on the reverse with two adult African bush elephants. These two elephants have long tusks indicative of their advanced age and face inward toward one another. Between the two, set in the distance, you can see the peak at Mount Kilimanjaro.
History
The Bavarian State Mint has aggressively expanded the Somalia Elephant Series since 2016. In addition to increasing the purity of its coins to .9999 in silver and gold that year, the mint introduced three fractional-weight silver coins and added more fractional coins to the gold series to include these 1/25 oz coins and a 1/50 oz gold coin.
