History
The Mayflower that carried the Puritans from England to America is just one of 26 vessels given this name during the reign of King James I of England between 1603 and 1625. This particular Mayflower was built in Harwich, Essex, England, in 1609 and made its maiden voyage as a charter trip to Trondheim, Norway, to bring a load of herring back to London. The ship is also known to have taken cross-Channel voyages to France with English linens, bringing back French wines. Records suggest it may have also gone on whaling voyages in the North Atlantic as far as Greenland and sailed to ports along the Iberian Peninsula in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea as well. All this was before its voyage across the Atlantic to the New World.
