In early 17th-century England, the term Mayflower didnt carry the recognition and weight it now does in the United States. Some 26 ships were given this name in the register of the Port Books of England between 1603 and 1625 during the reign of King James I of England. The popularity of the name remains unknown to this day, but only one Mayflower ship would etch its name in the history books. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase the 2020 Proof Rwandan Mayflower Nautical Ounce 1 oz Silver Coin online at Provident Metals.

The Mayflower that carried the Puritans across the Atlantic Ocean to what is now Massachusetts in the Cape Cod area was built in Harwich, Essex County in 1609. This is the same city in which the ships long-time Captain, Christopher Jones, was born 39 years earlier. The ships original voyages as a commercial cargo ship included visits to Trondheim, Norway, coastal France, Portugal, Spain, and the Canary Islands. In the summer of 1620, it prepared for a transatlantic voyage to the New World with hopeful Puritans in tow.

Obverse

In the obverse design element, the 2020 Proof Rwandan Mayflower Nautical Ounce 1 oz Silver coin features a depiction of the Mayflower as it sails the oceans rough waters. The Mayflower picked up English Puritan separatists in Southampton from the Speedwell, another vessel that had gathered the Puritans from exile in Holland.

Reverse

For the reverse design field, the 2020 Proof Rwandan Mayflower Nautical Ounce Silver Coin showcases the Rwandan coat of arms. The national shield features a traditional basket in the center flanked immediately by a branch from a coffee tree and a stem of sorghum. These elements are flanked further out by traditional warrior shields. The entire seal is surrounded by a rope tied in a knot at the bottom.

History

The Mayflower was originally scheduled to traverse the Atlantic Ocean with the Speedwell for America, but two leaks in the Speedwell forced its captain to abandon the voyage and shift some of the Puritans to the Mayflower. The remaining Puritans returned to Holland. For those who arrived in the New World, the early years were rough, but they eventually formed what would become the Plymouth Colony and, later, Massachusetts.
