{{/presale}}The first silver bullion coin for New Zealand to be issued by the privately-owned New Zealand Mint is the Chatham Island Crested Penguin. The Chatham Island archipelago consists of 10 individual islands 500 miles to the east of New Zealands South Island and was once home to the Chatham Island Crested Penguin. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase 2020 New Zealand Chatham Island Crested Penguin 1 oz Silver Coins online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Eudyptes warhami, better known as the Chatham penguin, was a species of crested penguins endemic to the Chatham Islands. Now extinct, this species of crested penguin is believed to have become extinct after the Moriori people, Polynesians by ethnicity, arrived in the archipelago around 450 years ago. Most scientists believe the crested penguins were hunted to extinction within 100 to 250 years of the Moriori arriving, though some suggest sightings of the birds still occurred in the 19th century when the Maori from New Zealand began to arrive and conquer the islands, and by later Europeans who first saw the islands.
Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II is depicted in right-profile relief on the obverse of 2020 New Zealand Chatham Island Crested Penguin 1 oz Silver Coins. This bust of the Queen was created for the Royal Mint of England in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley and depicts the Queen with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara on her head. Inscriptions include New Zealand, .999 Ag 1 oz, Elizabeth II, and 2020.
Reverse
Two members of the crested penguin species are found on the reverse side of the 2020 New Zealand Chatham Island Crested Penguin 1 oz Silver Coins. The two penguins are shown on a rocky outcrop as the waves of the ocean turbulently crash in the background. The background field includes a Maori symbol in the design field. The inscriptions on this side of the coin read Chatham Island Crested Penguin and One Dollar.
History
The New Zealand Mint is a privately-owned facility located in Auckland that has more than 40 years of experience issuing gold and silver bullion coins. The mint is not responsible for the production of national currency in New Zealand, and has now issued its first-ever New Zealand silver bullion coin in the form of the Chatham Island Crested Penguin.
