Obverse
On the obverse side of 2020 Mexican Libertad 5 oz Silver Coins is a depiction of Winged Victory dominating the foreground of the coin. The view you get comes from an angle near the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column where the 22-foot tall statue of the Angel of Independence stands watching out over Mexico City. The distant background offers views of the volcanic mountain peaks at Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. Inscriptions include 5 Onza, Plata Pura, 2020 Ley .999, and the Mexican Mints MO mint mark.
Reverse
The reverse face of the 2020 Mexican Libertad 5 oz Silver Coin features 11 different versions of the national emblem. The modern coat of arms for Mexico is depicted in the center of the design field with Estados Unidos Mexicanos inscribed directly above and a wreath directly below. Around the outer edge of the design field are 10 historic versions of the seal previously used by the Mexican government.
History
The Mexican Libertad 5 oz Silver coin debuted in 1996. Its mintage in its first year was 20,000, the second-highest in the history of this weight behind the 21,000 coins sold in 2009. However, recent years have seen the 5 oz coin enjoy its greatest sustained demand with mintages of 11,400 in 2016, 16,600 in 2018, and 18,000 in 2019.
