Reverse
On the reverse side of the 2020 Cook Islands Bounty 1 oz Silver Coin is a depiction of the HMS Bounty from the port side as it sails. The ship was birthed in 1784 as the Bethia as a private merchant ship dispersing 215 tons. Small by Royal Navy standards, the ship was renamed the HMS Bounty when purchased by the Royal Navy and retrofitted for a voyage to Tahiti to include more space and armaments to defend itself.
History
The HMS Bounty is one of the most famous ships in world history, but not for great reasons. The crew of the HMS Bounty launched a mutiny on commander William Bligh as the HMS Bounty set sail for England following its time in Tahiti. The ship spent 10 months sailing from England around the tip of Africa through the Indian Ocean to Tahiti. After five months in Tahiti harvesting breadfruit plants and preparing the plants for the journey to the West Indies, the crew launched its mutiny in April 1789 as the Bounty was passing Tonga. The mutinous crew eventually burned the HMS Bounty while it was anchored off the Pitcairn Islands.
