The HMS Bounty was built in 1784 as the Bethia to serve as a private merchant vessel. In 1787, the Royal Navy purchased the Bethia, refitting the vessel with armaments to defend itself and renaming the vessel the HMS Bounty. The ship was sent on a single mission by the Royal Navy starting in 1787 with the goal of reaching the islands of Tahiti in the South Pacific. The goal was not one of military conquest or exploration, but rather science. The vessel was to retrieve breadfruit plants to test the ability of the plant species to grow in the islands of the West Indies as a cheap source of food for slave populations in the Caribbean islands.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the 2020 Cook Islands Bounty 1/10 oz Gold Coins is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The right-profile bust of the Queen shown here was designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley and remains in use for several Commonwealth nations in the South Pacific. The image is accompanied by inscriptions of Elizabeth II, Cook Islands, and 2020.

Reverse

The reverse field of the 2020 Cook Islands Bounty Gold Coin is an image of the HMS Bounty. The Bounty was small for its style of ship with a total tonnage of just 215 tons. However, the ship did have three masts and was fully rigged. When the Royal Navy purchased and refitted the ship, four 4-pound cannons and 10 swivel guns were added to the ship for defensive purposes. Inscriptions include 10 Dollars and 1/10 oz Fine Gold .9999.

History

The HMS Bountys scientific expedition took 10 months for the ship to reach the islands of Tahiti. The ship and its crew remained on Tahiti for five months and suffered a mutiny as it attempted its return trip to England. The mutineers eventually settled on Pitcairn Island, burning the HMS Bounty to prevent the detection of the ship and block any escape attempts.
