The wedge tail eagle is not just one of the most powerful aerial predators in the world today, it is also one of the most popular wildlife designs on Perth Mint coins as well. Introduced in 2014, the Australian Wedge Tail Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin has been a sellout in most of its release years, including the last two in a row in 2018 and 2019. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase 2020 Australian Wedge Tail Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins online from Provident Metals.

Wedge tail eagles are predominantly dark-colored and belong to the family of eagles known as booted eagles. One of 12 species in that group, the wedge tail is the largest bird of prey you will find on the Australian continent. The wedge tail is named for its wedge-shaped tail feathers and has a wingspan of up to 9ft 4in in width. This allows the wedge tail to soar as high as 5,900 feet in the air where it can glide for hours without a wingbeat.

Obverse

On the obverse face of the 2020 Australian Wedge Tail Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin is an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This effigy of Her Majesty was developed by Jody Clark in 2015 for the Royal Mint of England and comes to the Perth Mint with modifications for Australian coinage. The British design does not include the Queens neck in full or her shoulders, a feature that makes its first appearance on Australian coins since 1966. The Queen is shown at the age of 89 in this design with the George IV State Diadem Crown.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2020 Australian Wedge Tail Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin features a wedge tail eagle in flight. The powerful aerial predator is shown here with its talons extended as it hopes to swoop in silently on its prey. The wedge tail subsists on a wide variety of prey that includes rabbits, foxes, feral cats, wallabies, and even small kangaroos at times.

History

The Australian Wedge Tail Eagle 1 oz Silver coin debuted in 2014 with an image of the powerful bird from John Mercanti. That design was repeated in 2014, a fresh design debuted in 2016 and was repeated in 2017. However, the 2018, 2019, and these 2020 coins each have a unique image of the wedge tail.
