{{/presale}}On April 17, 1970, the crew of Apollo 13 made a historic landing in the South Pacific Ocean that showcased the ingenuity and problem-solving abilities of NASA to avoid a crisis and bring men back to Earth safely after a disaster in space. To honor the 50th anniversary, the Pobjoy Mint released a commemorative silver coin on April 17, 2020, the very day 50 years on from Apollo 13s landing. Right now, you can purchase 2020 50th Anniversary of Apollo 13 2 oz Silver Coins online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
With your purchase of 2020 50th Anniversary of Apollo 13 2 oz Silver coins, you receive an individual coin set in a black presentation box from the Pobjoy Mint. Each one of the coins comes with its own Certificate of Authenticity as well. These unique 2 oz silver coins are ultra-high-relief strikes. This means the coins have been struck several times under high pressure during the coining process. The result is a deeper field and greater visual depth on the 3D designs.
Obverse
The obverse face of 2020 50th Anniversary of Apollo 13 2 oz Silver Coins includes a right-profile bust of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head, earrings in her ears, and a necklace around her neck resting on her shoulders. This bust of the Queen is exclusive to the Pobjoy Mint.
Reverse
On the reverse side of 2020 50th Anniversary of Apollo 13 2 oz Silver Coins is an image of the Apollo 13 capsule. Here, you can see the capsule as it splashes down into the South Pacific. A recover helicopter from the USS Iwo Jima amphibious assault ship moves in to recover the astronauts from the capsule.
History
On April 11, 1970, Apollo 13 lifted off from Florida, but just two days into its mission it met with disaster. During a routine test of oxygen tanks, a faulty wire ignited an explosion that vented the oxygen from the capsule. The three-man crew was forced to live in the two-man lunar lander for four days during the return trip to Earth with cold, wet conditions and less water and oxygen. However, Apollo 13 did showcase the ability of NASA to improvise from a world away to save astronauts in orbit.
