Guam is the westernmost territory of the United States of America and, due to its location on the other side of the international dateline, often bills itself as the place where America starts the day. Guam is part of the broader Mariana Island chain, but maintains its own status separate from the Northern Mariana Islands that also constitute a US territory in the Pacific Ocean.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the 2019-P Burnished ATB War in the Pacific National Historical Park 5 oz Silver Coin is an effigy of President George Washington. The first Commander-in-Chief, Washington served two terms as president in the 1790s and voluntarily stepped aside after those terms for a new president to be elected. Washington has been on the circulation quarter since 1932.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 2019-P Burnished ATB War in the Pacific National Historical Park 5 oz Silver includes the images of American GIs storming the beaches of Guam to retake the island from Japanese control in the late summer of 1944.

History

The Second Battle of Guam is depicted in the reverse design of these 2019-P Burnished ATB 5 oz Silver Coins. Between July 21st and August 10th of 1944, the United States Military fought a bloody campaign to retake the island of Guam from Japanese control. The campaign was one of many island-hopping battles the US fought to push Japanese forces back and was strategically chosen due to Guams location. Today, the US maintains a heavy military presence on the island with a major bomber task force at Andersen Air Force Base and a US Navy base for carrier task force refueling and submarine resupplies.
