{{/presale}}At Queen Elizabeth II’s 1953 coronation, ten statues called The Queen’s Beasts stood guard at the entrance to Westminster Abbey. Each creature represented a thread in the young queen’s ancient tapestry of royal heritage that passed down to her on that historic day. In 2016, the Royal Mint reincarnated the ten royal guardians who stood guard that day in a beautiful new coin series called The Queen’s Beasts. Each new release explores one of these ten fantastical protectors and the centuries-old story they have to tell.
The 2nd release in the Queen’s Beasts 10-coin series commemorates the gallant Unicorn of Scotland. Long the stuff of fairy tales, the unicorn was once believed to be a real animal – with the long tusk of the narwal mistakenly presented as proof of its existence. The unicorn was passed to Queen Elizabeth through James I, who chose the beast to join the Lion of England in supporting the royal arms as a symbol of Scotland and England’s unity. The two beasts have appeared together in heraldry ever since. The Unicorn is now beautifully reimagined in 1 oz of .9995 fine platinum, bearing a face value of 10 pounds backed by the British government. Add this stunning Platinum Unicorn to your Queen’s Beast collection today!
Like most British sovereign coins, the obverse displays coin artist Jody Clark’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fifth portrait of Her Majesty to be used on coinage during her historically long reign. Inscriptions include “ELIZABETH II, D.G. REG. F.D., 10 POUNDS”, and the designer’s initials surrounding the image.
The reverse of this 1 oz Platinum coin features the Unicorn of Scotland bearing a coronet around its neck and attached to a chain, symbolizing the taming of a great beast to serve the king. It rears up behind the royal coat of Scotland shield depicting the fierce Lion of England. Inscriptions read “Unicorn of Scotland”, the year of issue, and the metal weight and purity.
Each Platinum Unicorn was produced at the British Royal Mint, the world’s oldest and most renowned mint. The Royal Mint has held a tradition of craftsmanship, heritage, and artistry for over 1,100 years. Today the Royal Mint remains the industry-leading manufacturer of currency, coinage, bullion, and medals in the world.
