The 2019 Australian Nugget 1 oz Silver Coin was minted to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the Welcome Stranger Gold Nugget that was found in a field near Moliagul, Victoria, Australia. It was found by John Deason and Richard Oates on February 5, 1869, near the roots of a tree.

Obverse

The obverse side of each of these coins features the right-profile image of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the sixth rendition of the Queens image that has been used on Australian coinage. This depiction was based on the fifth-generation image used by the Royal Mint of England that was created by Jody Clark. This is the first Australian design since the 1960s that includes the Queens neckline and shoulders.

Reverse

On the reverse face of each of these coins is the Welcome Stranger Gold Nugget. In addition to the Welcome Stranger Gold Nugget design, you can also see inscriptions of the year, weight, purity, and metal of the coin.

History

The gold nugget was so large that it had to be broken over an anvil before it could be weighed on the bank scales. The nugget weighed 66 kilograms. When the gold nugget was found in 1869, it was worth 10,000 pounds, which would be between $3 and $4 million in todays money.
