{{/presale}}The Krugerrand derives its name from Paul Kruger, one of South Africa’s most famous political and military figures. His portrait appears on the obverse of the Krugerrand along with the inscriptions “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA.” Reflecting the country’s bilingualism, the name of South Africa is displayed in both Afrikaans and English.
The springbok, an antelope commonly seen in South Africa, appears on the Krugerrand’s reverse. It is surrounded by the inscription “KRUGERRAND,” the date, and the coin’s weight in fine gold. Although not marked as such, each Krugerrand has a purity of 0.9167.
The Krugerrand is one of the world’s most iconic and successful 1 oz gold coins. This 2018 edition marks the 51st year of issue for the Krugerrand series. Although the design is largely unchanged from the original 1967 version, collectors and investors often prefer current-year specimens for their pristine condition.
Unlike random date Krugerrands, which were typically made in the late 1970s or early 1980s, these 2018 specimens are mint-fresh with immaculate surfaces. They have a lovely rose-gold color thanks to their alloy. To make the Krugerrand more durable, the South African Mint adds a small quantity of copper. This 91.67% gold alloy is similar to the composition of the British Gold Sovereign and the US Gold Eagle.
