Highlights:
Colorized silver coins feature a thin layer of colorized lacquer on select design elements to reinvent the traditional image for a given date mark in a series. In the case of Somalia Elephant colorized releases, the application of the thin layer of colorization is limited to the reverse design elements of the African bush elephant. In a Day and Night Set such as this one, you will find two different settings for the same design.
Obverse
On the obverse of 2018 Somalia Elephant Day and Night Two-Coin Sets, you will find the national coat of arms for Somalia. The design centers on a crowned shield with a single star on its surface set against a backdrop of horizontal lines. The shield is supported by leopards with crossed spears and fern leaves below draped in a ribbon. Inscriptions of Somali Republic, 2018, and 100 Shillings all feature on this side of the coin.
Reverse
The reverse face of 2018 Somalia Elephant 1 oz Silver Coins features the image of an adult bush elephant in the immediate foreground. The elephants face is so close that some of its trunk and tusks escape the inner circle of the design field to pierce the design rim. The colorization of the two coins in this release vary. The Day coin has warm hues of orange and yellow in the thinly-clouded sky. The Night coin has a bright white-blue moon in the sky with dark purple and blue hues in the background to capture the beauty of the night sky. In both cases, the elephant has its traditional white-ivory tusks and gray skin.
History
Somalia Elephant Silver Coins have been issued for the Somali Republic since 2004, making this the 15th release of the coin under that name. However, the series overall has been available for 20 years as of this release as it dates back to 1999. From 1999 to 2003, the Bavarian State Mint issued the coins as the Zambia Elephant Silver Series.
