{{/presale}}The Native American Mint announced the release of a series of 50 coins to pay tribute to many of the Native American tribes that have helped to define the country as we know it. The 2018 Proof Virginia Rappahannock Big-Eared Bat 1 oz Silver Coin is the 5th coin released in 2018 and the 18th overall release in the series. It has a face value of $1, which is backed by the Rappahannock people. The coins are not considered legal tender in the United States, but the tribes are considered to be sovereign nations and thus able to apply a face value.

The coins in this collection honor individual tribes, and an animal that was found in the area the tribe called home or an animal that was relevant to the life of the tribe. The 2018 Proof Virginia Rappahannock Big-Eared Bat 1 oz Silver Coin recognizes the Rappahannock people. As one of the oldest and historically significant tribes in American history, the Rappahannock made their home in the Rappahannock River Valley of what is today known as Virginia. The Rappahannock tribe were amongst the first to meet the British settlers that arrived to settle down and build a new life.
The people of the Rappahannock are just 500 or so in number. They are one of the 11 state-recognized tribes to be found living in Virginia.
