The 2018 ATB Series featured five designs focused on preserving the waterways used by humans for recreation and by animal species for breeding grounds. The first two releases of the year focused on national lakeshore preserves along the shores of Lake Superior in Wisconsin and Michigan. Minnesotas release represented one of the purest waterways in America along the border with Canada. In this release for Georgia, an important breeding ground along the Atlantic Coast.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 2018-P Burnished ATB Cumberland Island National Seashore 5 oz Silver Coin is an effigy of President George Washington. This left-profile bust of Washington was created in 1932 by John Flanagan for use on the circulation quarter. He was honored in 1932 with his bust on the quarter to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth.
Reverse
The reverse field on the 2018-P Burnished ATB Cumberland Island 5 oz Silver Coin includes the image of a snowy egret within the salt marshes of Cumberland Island National Seashore. Salt marshes provide a great breeding and feeding environment for migratory birds. Salt marshes are regularly flooded with salty seawater and provide ample vegetation growing in the flats.
History
Cumberland Island National Seashore preserves the vast majority of Cumberland Island, the largest of the Golden Isles on the Georgia coast. The seashore preserve helps to sustain and protect beaches, sand dunes, and freshwater lakes within the parks boundaries. In addition to protecting the land for migratory birds, the park allows for camping.
