Obverse
The obverse face of the 2018 Mexican Libertad Reverse Proof 5 oz Silver Coin includes a depiction of Winged Victory. Based on the ancient goddess of victory, her figure is associated with victory over death and was often worshipped by victorious ancient generals returning from warfare. In this case, Winged Victory is a symbol to the Mexican people of triumph over the tyrannical colonial rule of the Spanish. She holds up a crown wreath in her right hand while her left hand holds broken chains.
Reverse
On the reverse field of the 2018 Mexican Libertad Reverse Proof 5 oz Silver Coins is an image of the Mexican coat of arms. The larger seal in the center of the design field is the modern version with a powerful golden eagle on a cactus perch as it battles with a serpent. A cactus wreath frames it in a half-moon shape from below with Estados Unidos Mexicanos inscribed above. Around the design field, you will notice 10 different historic versions of the seal used at some point in Mexicos independent history.
History
The Mexican Mint first introduced reverse proof coins in 2015 with the proof 1 oz silver coin in the collection. In 2017, the 2 oz and 5 oz coins were given a reverse proof option as well. That same year saw the introduction of an antique coin in all three weights as well. The highest mintage of reverse proofs to date in the 5 oz silver coin are these 2018 coins with 2,100 issued.
