A mountainous island in the Caribbean, Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory, known for its rich Irish history. The Irish roots of the island run so deep that the island is nicknamed the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean. The island is also famous for its shoreline caves, pristine coral reefs and the volcanic activity that has impacted the southernmost end of the island. This coin, minted by Scottsdale Mint and backed by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, is a colorized collectible that is made with .999 pure silver. Each coin is enclosed within a protective capsule and delivered in a custom box that also contains the Certificate of Authenticity.

Coin Highlights:

  • Delivered inside protective capsules and custom boxes, includes Certificate of Authenticity.
  • 5thcoin in the EC8 Caribbean Series.
  • 2,500 limited mintage.
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • Face value of 2 Dollars (XCD), backed by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank.
  • Obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Reverse features the Montserrat crest, adjacent to the British Union flag.

The geography of Montserrat looks quite similar to Ireland when views from the sea. This, along with its large Irish population, earned the island its Emerald Isle of the Caribbean moniker. In the 1630s, when the British first set to colonize the island, they brought over an influx of forced Irish laborers to the island. Through the years, more Irish people followed to the island, to the degree that the islands coat of arms features many Irish-inspired figures.

Obverse

The obverse design of the 2018 Montserrat Emerald Isle of the Caribbean Colorized Silver Coin features the right-profile portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait was famously created in 1998 by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley and appears on many coins belonging to British Overseas Territories.

Reverse

The reverse face of 2018 Montserrate Emerald Isle of the Caribbean 1 oz Silver Colorized Coins includes the symbols of both Britain and Montserrat. The British Union Jack Flag appears on one side along with the coat of arms for Montserrat on the other. The coat of arms for the island nation includes a vision of Erin, the female personification of Ireland.

History

Montserrat has a beautiful coastline that evokes images of the coast of Ireland. With its rocky geographic structures and wave-kissed rocks, many an early European to arrive on the shores of the Caribbean island believed it to be the spitting image of Ireland.
