Scientifically named Bison bison Athabasca, the Canadian wood bison is the largest land animal in North America. Males (bulls) weigh between 900 to 2,000 kg (2,000 to 4,400 lbs), and females (cows) weigh between 360 to 800 kg (800 to 1,800 lbs).

Obverse

On the obverse of 2018 Buffalo 1/4 oz Gold Coins, discover a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, elegantly presented in right-profile relief based on the 2003 Susanna Blunt design. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, D.G. REGINA, and 10 DOLLARS.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2018 Canadian Buffalo Gold Coin showcases a mighty bison head in right-profile relief, featuring its impressive horns and shaggy fur. The inscriptions include CANADA, 2018, FINE GOLD 1/4 OZ OR PUR, and 9999.

History

Efforts have been made to reintroduce wood bison to their historical range. For example, herds have been reintroduced to areas like Elk Island National Park in Alberta. Wood bison hold cultural significance for indigenous peoples in Canada. They are integral to the traditional way of life for many communities and are seen as a symbol of strength and resilience.
