The British Shengxiao Series is a collection of lunar-themed designs in silver and gold bullion that debuted in 2014. Through much of its history, the series featured designs created by Wuon-Gean Ho, an Oxford-born British-Chinese citizen. Her 2018 design for the Year of the Dog not only represented the Year of the Dog beautifully, but had a connection to Britain in her choice of dog breed. Today, you have the opportunity to buy the 2018 British Lunar Year of the Dog 1 oz Gold Coin at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with an individual protective plastic capsule!
  • 5th coin issued in the Shengxiao Series!
  • Limited mintage of just 8,888 gold coins!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold in BU condition.
  • The face value of 100 (GBP) is backed by Britain.
  • Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse.
  • A small terrier runs through a field on the reverse.

Each release in the Shengxiao Series comes with a fresh design of the animal featured that year on the Chinese Lunar Calendar, otherwise known as the Zodiac. The terrier is a popular breed in the United Kingdom. Today, it is known as a loyal companion as a lovable pet, but this game breed has a rich tradition as a hunting companion in the United Kingdom as well.

Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II is depicted on the obverse of the 2018 British Lunar Year of the Dog 1 oz Gold Coin from the Royal Mint of England. This sixth-generation effigy of the Queen was developed in 2015 by Jody Clark, the youngest British artist to create a monarch portrait for British coinage. Clarks design shows the Queen at the age of 89 in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head.

Reverse

A small terrier is shown on the reverse of the 2018 British Lunar Year of the Dog Gold Coin. The design captures the small, lovable breed running through a field of grass. The background field on both sides of the coin has unique visuals. For example, the obverse background has the guilloche design element that appears similar to a braided rope. This reverse field has rough visuals that contrast with the somewhat mirrored appearance of the dog to contrast the animal from the field.

History

Shengxiao Series silver and gold coins from the Royal Mint of England are produced with limited mintage figures each year. Most of those mintages end with 8s as the number is considered lucky in Chinese society.
