Obverse
The obverse of the 2018 Australian Bird of Paradise 1 oz Silver Coins includes an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. In this fifth-generation design for Australian coins, Ian Rank-Broadleys 1998 effigy of the Queen has become one of the most popular portraits of the monarch during her reign. It features widely on various denominations of coinage and paper currency in Britain and throughout the Commonwealth. In this particular design, the Queen is wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.
Reverse
On the reverse field of the 2018 Australian Bird of Paradise Silver Coin, you will find a creature known as the Victorias riflebird. First discovered and cataloged by outsiders when a Scottish naturalist found the bird on the Australian continent in the mid-19th century, the birds bright plumage and coloration resembled that of the British Rifle Squads of the British Army. As such, the creature was named both for Queen Victoria, the reigning monarch at the time, and the unit of British soldiers whose uniforms so closely matched those colors of the bird.
History
The Bird of Paradise Series includes a 1 oz silver bullion coin, 1 oz gold bullion coin, and a 1 oz proof silver coin. The initial release depicted the Victorias riflebird, a subspecies within the broader bird of paradise group that inhabits certain regions of Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea.
