Obverse

The obverse of the 2018 Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runner 1 oz Silver Coin comes with a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is featured in right-profile relief in the popular 1998 design from Ian Rank-Broadley. This bust of the Queen is flanked by fern leaves on either side and shows the Queen with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara on her head. Inscriptions around the design edge include Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, 1 oz .999 Silver, Queen Elizabeth II, and Two Dollars.

Reverse

On the reverse face of 2018 Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runner Silver Coins is an image of a schooner in the Caribbean Sea serving as a rum runner. The ship is anchored just off shore from a sandy beach where there is a bottle of rum and a few extra barrels. The inscriptions read Antigua & Barbuda and 2018.

History

As the colonial powers of Spain and Britain realized the value of the rum industry within the Caribbean, both powers began to tax the import and export of rum between the islands, as well as in the ports of both North America and the New World. Britain, in particular, employed revenue cutters to track down rum runners trying to dodge the taxes on rum. Rum runners would often use armed, quick sloops and schooners to get away from the more heavily armed ships of revenue cutters and the Royal Navy.
