This has remained similar to the packaging of recent years.

Designs

The 2017 Proof Set contains 2 sets of coins the eighth annual release of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program set and the regular Proof coin set.

National parks and other national sites are depicted as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. It includes 56 quarters, of which 5 new quarters are included in each years Proof Sets. In 2017, the parks featured are the Effigy Mounds National Monument in Iowa, the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington DC, the Ozark National Scenic Riverways in Missouri, Ellis Island in New Jersey, and the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park in Indiana.

One each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, and Kennedy Half Dollar are regularly part of the Proof Set. A Native American Dollar series coin is also included. The 2017 Native American Dollar coin continues to feature the obverse design of Sacagawea carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste. Its reverse design features a profile of Sequoyah, the inventor of the Cherokee Syllabary. This language was adopted by the Cherokee Nation, and within months, many of the Cherokee had become literate.

History

Once the mintage of Proof Sets passed the 1 million mark in 1957, they remained above that level (with one exception in 1958) until 2012. In fact, many of those years were even above the 3 and 4 million mark. However, since 2011, sales have failed to reach the 1 million mark, with 2017 sales only reaching 568,681 sets. Beyond the regular cent/nickel/dime/quarter/half dollar, the Proof Sets have rotated in various other specialty sets, such as the Presidential Dollar Program, the America the Beautiful Quarters Program, and the Native American Dollar Program. In spite of what the lower sales might indicate, interest in the Proof Sets remains strong among coin collectors.
