The coins are made from .999 pure silver and feature the image of a member of the Choctaw Nation. The coins have a face value of $1, but they do not have legal tender status in the United States.

The Choctaw people have long called Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma home.

The reverse design of the 2017 Proof Mississippi Choctaw Water Moccasin 1 oz Silver Coin features an image of the venomous water moccasin snake. These snakes hold the distinction of being the only semi-aquatic viper species around the globe. While they are most often found living in streams, marshes, shallow lakes and bayous, they have been seen in the Gulf of Mexico and in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
The water moccasin is not often easy to spot in the waters, which is why it is responsible for countless deaths even today.
