{{/presale}}Like other coins produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, the obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Inscriptions include Her Majesty’s name and the coin’s denomination of 5 dollars. Another hallmark of the RCM is their attention to security and authenticity. Both sides of this coin feature precision-cut radial lines that create a unique shimmer when held up in light.
First seen on Canadian silver dollars from 1935 to 1986 and designed by Emanuel Hahn, the reverse’s design provides a nod to Canada’s early history as an untamed frontier during the fur trade era. The focal point is a canoe manned by a voyageur and an Aboriginal, with a bundle of wrapped furs between the figures. Vertical rays in the sky represent the aurora borealis. Inscriptions include the year of issue, weight, purity, and a mention that the coin is a 150 year special edition. You’ll also find a micro-engraved maple leaf with a “17” in the center for security.
The Voyageur coin was originally introduced in 1935 as Canada’s first circulating silver dollar, marking the Silver Jubilee celebrations for King George V. Its design captured the spirit of the frontier nation and became one of the most popular coin designs ever circulated in Canada. The new special edition 2017 release features the same classic design, with a few modern upgrades like the mint’s famed security features.
Individual coins will ship in a plastic flip. Quantities of 25 come in plastic tubes, and quantities of 500 come in a monster box with a security seal and custom label featuring the official Canada 150 logo.

Please note: At Provident, customer satisfaction through delivery of quality products is of the highest importance. In an effort to preserve the quality of the Voyageur coins that ship in 25 piece rolls, we have chosen to open the Royal Canadian Mint tubes and place packing materials inside the tube as well as tape the tube lid. This decision is based on past experience and customer feedback regarding quality. Upon receiving our first shipment of Voyageur silver coins, our quality control department noted that the nature of strike and rim height of these coins leaves a significant amount of space inside the tube which would enable the coins to “rattle” within the tube during shipping. The decision to ship the Voyageur coins in this manner will not change how we currently package other issues from the Royal Canadian Mint as these coins appear to be the exception.
