Highlights:
If you purchase the 2017 Canadian Elk 1 oz Gold Coin in this Provident Metals listing, you will receive a coin with a perfect certification. Coins in Mint State 70 condition exhibit full, original mint luster and have no detracting flaws of any kind on the design elements or surface areas of the coin.
Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II is found on the obverse of each 2017 Canadian Elk 1 oz Gold Coin. This is the fourth-generation depiction of the Queen to feature on Canadian coins and is the first during her reign to show Her Majesty without a crown. This design was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt, who is just the second Canadian artist to ever create a bust of a British monarch on the obverse of Canadian denominations.
Reverse
A bugling elk is depicted on the reverse side of 2017 Canadian Elk 1 oz Gold Coins. The elk is depicted in right-profile relief with radiating lines emanating from its mouth that represent the sound of its bugle as it unleashes its call out into the wilds of Canada.
History
The Call of the Wild Series from the Royal Canadian Mint features three designs that preceded this release. The collection started with the Howling Wolf and was followed by the Roaring Grizzly and the Growling Cougar. The elks native call is known as the bugle and its typically heard during the mating season. Male elks used the loud call to establish dominance over other males in the area while attracting female partners.
