The Australian Wedge Tail Eagle was introduced in 2014 and has been a hot item in each year of availability from the mint. Highlights:
The Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Series of silver bullion coins is designed for the Perth Mint by John Mercanti. Mr. Mercanti formerly worked for the United States Mint for nearly four decades. His career began as an apprentice at the Philadelphia Mint and culminated in his four-year stint as the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 2006 until his retirement in 2010. During his time with the US Mint, his major credits include the artwork of the heraldic eagle on the American Eagle Silver bullion coin and the Statue of Liberty on the American Eagle Platinum bullion coin.
Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II is depicted on the obverse of the 2017 Australian Wedge Tail Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin. This design from Ian Rank-Broadley was created in 1998 for the Royal Mint of England and served as the fifth-generation Australian portrait of Her Majesty on coinage until 2018/2019. It depicts the Queen in right-profile relief with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.
Reverse
A large wedge tail eagle is found on the reverse of 2017 Australian Wedge Tail Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins. This depiction features the eagle at rest, wings at its side, as it sits perched on a tree. Its eyes are fixed on the horizon as it scans for threats or even possible prey. This is the fourth release of this series, but this is just the second design in the collection.
History
Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coins are produced with low mintages each year by the Perth Mint. The design elements change on the reverse, but did not change each year at first. The 2014 and 2015 coins shared the same design, while the 2016 and these 2017 coins shared a new design separate from that of the first two releases.
Ordering
These 2017 Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coins are MS69 specimens. Coins in this condition have full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Those flaws are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines. Early Release labels indicate the coins arrived for grading within the first 30 days of release.
