Obverse
Liberty stands guard over the nation in the gap of a wall on the obverse of 2016-W American Standing Liberty Quarter 1/4 oz Gold Coin. Designed by Hermon Atkins MacNeil, it shows Liberty in the gap looking to the heraldic east with a round shield bearing the US heraldic shield on its surface. Her right hand, situated to the heraldic west, holds onto an olive branch in hopes of peace.
Reverse
An American bald eagle is featured on the reverse of the 2016-W American Standing Liberty Quarter 1/4 oz Gold Coin. At this point in history, the US Mint always placed the American bald eagle on the reverse of US currency. This design also came from MacNeil and featured an eagle soaring in flight with its wings spread as wide as possible.
History
The 2016 issue of these iconic designs marked 100 years from the first release of the Mercury Dime, Standing Liberty Quarter, and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. The Standing Liberty Quarter was in circulation the shortest time, only struck by the US Mint until 1930 and then suspended. It was replaced in 1932 by the Washington bust that remains on the coins to this day.
