Obverse

The obverse of the 2016-W Proof American Eagle Gold Coin features Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty, with flowing hair, a torch, and an olive branch, and the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “2016.”

Reverse

The reverse of the 2016-W Proof Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin displays a male Bald Eagle returning to his nest with an olive branch, where a female eagle and hatchlings await. This scene is accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “1/4 OZ FINE GOLD – 10 DOLLARS,” and the West Point Mint’s “W” mark.

History

The American Eagle Gold Coin has a design lineage tracing back to the Double Eagle gold piece, minted between 1907 and 1933. Augustus Saint-Gaudens, tasked by President Theodore Roosevelt to enhance American coinage, created a high-relief coin that is still celebrated. The U.S. Mint started the American Gold Eagle series in 1986, combining investment value with aesthetic appeal.
