Obverse
The obverse side of the 2016-W American Mercury Dime 1/10 oz Gold Coin includes an effigy of Liberty. Known officially as Winged Liberty, this design depicts Liberty in left-profile relief wearing a winged Phrygian cap. Liberty is inscribed above her head with In God We Trust, 2016, and AW also inscribed on this face of the coin.
Reverse
On the reverse face of 2016 American Mercury Dime 1/10 oz Gold Coins is a depiction of the Roman fasces. Inscriptions on this field include United States of America, One Dime, E Pluribus Unum, Au 24K 1/10 oz., and the W mint mark of the West Point Mint.
History
The Mercury Dime was so-named by the American public because it was believed the left-profile bust of Liberty resembled depictions of the Roman messenger god Mercury. It was in production by the mint from 1916 to 1945 before being replaced with the current Roosevelt Dime design.
