The American Mercury Dime Gold Coin release at the US Mint 2016 marked the centennial of the original Mercury Dime silver coin released into circulation in 1916. Today, you have the opportunity to buy 2016-W American Mercury Dime 1/10 oz Gold Coins online from Provident Metals in near-perfect condition.

The Mercury Dime was released in 1916 as one of three designs to replace the designs of the Barber Coinage. Charles E. Barber was the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint at the time and his designs from 1892 were set to be replaced on the dime, quarter, and half dollar. Adolph A. Weinman created not only the Mercury Dime design to replace Barbers artwork, but also the Walking Liberty Half Dollar to replace Barbers imagery on that coin as well.

Obverse

Winged Liberty is found on the obverse of the 2016-W American Mercury Dime 1/10 oz Gold Coin. The image captures Liberty in left-profile relief with a few curls of hair sticking out from underneath the winged Phrygian cap on her head. There are inscriptions of Liberty along the top, In God We Trust beneath the chin of Liberty, 2016 under the neck of her bust, and AW initials for Weinman behind the neck.

Reverse

A Roman fasces is wrapped in an olive branch in the reverse design of 2016-W American Mercury Dime Gold Coins. This design was also created by Weinman for the release of the Mercury Dime in 1916. The fasces as a symbol of power and war actually predates the Roman Empire to the rule of the Etruscans, but was absorbed by the empire with its rise in the early centuries BCE. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read United States of America, one Dime, E Pluribus Unum, Au 24k 1/10 oz., and W as the mint mark from the West Point Mint.

History

The Mercury Dime was officially listed as the Winged Liberty Dime by the United States Mint. However, the Roman symbolism of the fasces on the reverse combined with the winged Phrygian cap on Libertys head, similar to the one worn by the Roman messenger god Mercury, lead to the popular usage of the term Mercury Dime among Americans. The Mercury Dime was struck from 1916 to 1945.

Ordering
