Highlights:
In 2016, the Bavarian State Mint made significant changes to the Somalia Elephant Silver Coins. Traditionally available only in 1 oz silver, 2016 saw the introduction of several fractional-ounce coins in silver for the first time. Additionally, the coins increased from .999 pure silver content to .9999 pure silver content.
Obverse
On the obverse face of the 2016 Somalia Elephant Lunar Monkey Privy 1 oz Silver Coin is a depiction of the coat of arms for Somalia. The national shield is a crowned shield that has a background field of horizontal lines with a single star set in the middle of the shield. Leopards support the shield from either side as two spears cross below with fern leaves and a ribbon draped over the spears.
Reverse
The reverse side of 2016 Somalia Elephant Lunar Monkey Privy 1 oz Silver Coin includes the image of an African bush elephant standing close in the foreground with its trunk raised high into the air as the sun sits low on the horizon in the distance. Along the outer-right side of the rim, you will find a small circle with the monkey privy mark inside to honor the fact that 2016 is the Year of the Monkey on the Chinese Lunar Calendar.
History
The Bavarian State Mint initially offered the African Elephant coin as the Zambia Elephant Silver Coin. This was the case for the 1999 to 2003 date marks. Starting in 2004, the series shifted to Somalia and featured only 1 oz gold and silver coins, for the most part, through 2016. This year saw an explosion in options that included these unique privy mark coins.
