{{/presale}}Mexican Libertads are some of the most popular coins in North America. They are a product of the Mexican Mint. While there are both gold and silver versions of the Libertad coins, the gold version was introduced a year before the silver version. Today, you can purchase the 2016 Proof Mexican Libertad 1/4 oz Gold Coin from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Mexican Libertad Gold Coins were first released in 1981 with a 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz weight options. While that production run only lasted a year, production started up again in 1991.
Obverse
On the obverse of all of these 2016 Proof Mexican Libertad 1/4 oz Gold Coins is the image of the Winged Victory statue that can be found in Mexico City. The statue was erected in 1920 as a celebration of the 100th anniversary of Mexican Independence. At the same time, the gold Centenario coin was also released, and this coin is where the Libertad gets its design inspiration.
Reverse
The coat of arms of Mexico is featured on the reverse of all Mexican Libertads. There are actually ten different versions of this coat of arms that have been used throughout history, but only the most rendition is used on Mexican Libertad Coins.
History
The Mexican Mint has been Mexicos official sovereign mint since 1535. In fact, it is the oldest operating minting facility in the Western Hemisphere. The mint was originally built by Spanish conquistadors who wanted to export gold back to Spain and continental Europe.
Proof Mexican Libertad Gold Coins have an interesting mintage history. In 1983, only 883 1 oz gold coins were minted. Then, there was a six-year hiatus before another coin was struck. In 1989, only 704 1/2 oz coins were minted. Regular minting didnt really occur until 2004 with the 1/4 oz proof coin. The next year, annual production started for the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz gold options.
