{{/presale}}Zodiac-themed coinage has swept the globe, and nearly each of the major mints around the world have their own lunar-themed coin series. Perth Mint is one of these many mints. The Lunar Series II coins are some of the most popular from the Perth Mint. Today, the 2016 Proof Australian Lunar Monkey 1 oz Silver Coin is available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These proof coins ship in special presentation packaging that helps you best display the coins in your home. It also helps protect the coin during the shipping process.
To create the special high-relief feature of these coins, the mint strikes them multiple times with high pressure. This process gives the coins a distinct contrast between the background and the design fields.
Obverse
Ian Rank-Broadleys image of Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse of these coins. He created this image in 1998, and it has been used on commonwealth coinage since then. Engravings on this face of the coin include the Queens name, the nation of issue, the face value, and the year of issue.
Reverse
On the reverse face, you will see two monkeys sitting in a peach tree. The image was designed by Ing Ing Jong, and in his rendition, one of the monkeys is an adult and the other is young. The younger of the two monkeys is holding a peach out for the adult monkey. Engravings on this side of the coin include the Chinese symbol for monkey, the phrase Year of the Monkey, and the P mint mark for the Perth Mint.
History
The Perth Mint was established in 1899 as part of the British Royal Mint refinery system in Australia. At the time, it was the third of three mints in the country made to produce coinage for Great Britain and its commonwealth countries. In the 1970s, the mint was sold to the government of Western Australia.
