Theodore Roosevelt National Park is the only national park in the country directly named for just one person. The park covers 70,446 acres of land spread out across three different geographical regions of the badlands in western North Dakota. History

President Roosevelt first visited the badlands of North Dakota in September 1883 on a bison hunt. During that visit, he bagged a bison and developed a deep love for the rugged lifestyle of the region and the beauty of the land. He spent $14,000 buying Maltese Cross Ranch and eventually invested in Elkhorn Ranch in the summer of 1884. The latter would eventually be used in the formation of the national park that now bears his name.
