History
Fort Moultrie was vital to American coastal defenses through nearly 200 years of American history. The fort was garrisoned by the 2nd South Carolina Regiment early in the American Revolution. As depicted in this design, William Jasper risked his own life to retrieve the regimental colors during the battle and return them to the ramparts above the fort on a temporary staff after it was blown off in a British bombardment.
