Obverse
President George Washington is found on the obverse side of 2016 ATB 5 oz Silver Coins. This left-profile portrait of President Washington was created in 1932 by John Flanagan and is based on a 1786 sculpted bust of Washington. It has featured on the US quarter since 1932 and is on the obverse of all ATB coins. The inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and QUARTER DOLLAR.
Reverse
The firehouse that became infamous as John Browns Fort is featured in the reverse design of 2016 ATB Harpers Ferry 5 oz Silver Coins. John Brown was an abolitionist who led a raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859 when it served as a federal armory. His goal was to capture federal weapons to provide to slaves in hopes of sparking an uprising that would see the slaves confront US forces. John Brown was eventually surrounded at the site by US Marines under the command of then-US Army Colonel Robert E. Lee.
History
Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is located in West Virginia at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. The site is named for John Harper, a man who acquired the land in 1751 and eventually started a ferry service on the rivers.
