Obverse

On the obverse side of 2015 Tokelau Great White Shark 1 oz Silver Coins is a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II along with the Badge of Tokelau. The bust of the Queen is a right-profile portrait created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley for the Royal Mint of England. It comes with a depiction of the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. Below the effigy of the Queen is the Badge of Tokelau, a traditional wooden tackle box used by indigenous fishermen. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include Elizabeth II, Tokelau 2015, and Five Dollars 1 oz 999 Silver. The ribbon below the Badge of Tokelau reads Tokelau mot e Atua, the Tokelauan phrase for Tokelau for God.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 2015 Tokelau Great White Shark Silver Coins includes a design of the Great White Shark. The great white has no known natural predators in the wild, with only the killer whale posing the occasional threat to the shark. Noted for its size, the largest female great whites ever recorded measured 20 feet in length and weighed upwards of 5,000 lbs.

History

Great White Sharks are one of the few animal species still alive from the prehistoric era. The earliest fossil records of the great white date back 16 million years to the mid-Miocene epoch. The Great White Shark is believed to have descended from the megalodon, a massive prehistoric shark that is estimated to have reached lengths of 56 feet and weights of 130,000 lbs.
