Highlights:
The first several years of the American Revolution were a struggle for the Continental Army and the would-be nation. In 1777, the Continental Army units under the command of General Horatio Gates met a British Army force under General John Burgoyne near Stillwater, New York, in a battle that would prove decisive for the American war effort.
Obverse
President George Washington is depicted on the obverse of all 2015 ATB Silver Coins. The Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army throughout the American Revolution and the first man to serve as the President of the United States of America, Washingtons steady hand was crucial in guiding the fledgling nation through the war and through the aftermath as it tried to form a national government.
Reverse
The hand of General John Burgoyne extends his sword in an act of surrender to General Horatio Gates in the reverse design of the 2015 ATB Saratoga 5 oz Silver Coin. Inscriptions on this side of the coin identify the year of issue, the park, the state represented, and the phrase E Pluribus Unum.
History
Prior to 1777, the Continental Army had never earned a decisive victory and the surrender of a British force in the American Revolution. The success of General Gates and his American forces was the first major victory for the Continental Army and showed potential allies in Europe that the American cause was worth backing. As a result, France threw its full support behind the Americans.
