{{/presale}}The state of Colorado is known for its mile-high Rocky Mountain peaks, skiing, snowboarding, and other outdoor sporting activities. What most people might not realize is that Colorado is also home to the largest sand dunes on the North American continent. Some of the dunes in the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado reach heights of 750 feet. Today, you have the chance to purchase 2014-P Burnished ATB Great Sand Dunes National park 5 oz Silver Coins online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The sand dunes that now form the peaks and valleys of Great Sand Dunes National Park were actually formed over the course of hundreds of thousands of years as sediment from the nearby mountains was deposited into the valley area. The sand dunes are located near the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range, the southernmost sub-range within the Rocky Mountains.
Obverse
President George Washington is featured in left-profile relief on the obverse of the 2014-P Burnished ATB Great Sand Dunes National Park. The nations first president features here in a design adapted from the US quarter as designed in 1932 by John Flanagan.
Reverse
In the reverse design element, the 2014-P Burnished ATB Great Sand Dunes National Park 5 oz Silver Coin showcases a father and son enjoying the recreational aspects of the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Set along the banks of the creek, the two enjoy a game as the sand dunes and mountain ranges loom in the distance.
History
President Herbert Hoover established the first park and preserve around the Great Sand Dunes in 1932. He established the Great Sand Dunes National Monument to protect some 35,500 acres of land. In 2000, Congress offered approval to expand the overall boundaries of the monument and redesignated it as a national park. The process included expanding the existing park and creating a new, additional preserve. Compared to the previous Great Sand Dunes National Monument, the newly-christened Great Sand Dunes National Park protected a total of 149,000 acres of land.
