Though the series is known for depicting the famous Australian bird in a variety of poses, the 2014 design could be taken directly from the nursery rhyme, as it features the laughing bird sitting in the branch of a gum tree on the obverse. The words “AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA” are positioned near the top of the rim, and the lower section says “2014 1 KILO 999 SILVER.”
The reverse includes the traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth. The rim says “ELIZABETH II,” “AUSTRALIA” and “30 DOLLARS.”
The song “Kookaburra” was written in 1932 by Marion Sinclair, a music teacher at a girls’ school in Melbourne. She entered the song in a competition by the Girl Guides Association of Victoria, and the proceeds of the rights to the song when toward the purchase of a camp ground. It was first performed at the 1934 annual Jamboree, and the founders of the Girl Guides and Girl Scouts/Boy Scouts, including Lord Baden-Powell, were in attendance. Because of this connection, the “Kookaburra” song is sometimes considered a traditional scouting song.
