History
The S.S. Gairsoppa was a British merchant ship traveling to Britain from India during World War II with a cargo load that included 7,000,000 ounces of silver ingots. The ship was running low on coal off the coast of Ireland and sunk by a German aircraft that torpedoed the S.S. Gairsoppa in 1941. In 2012, a US company contracted by the British government located the wreck and recovered some 1,400,000 ounces of silver. That silver found its way into these coins.
