The Perth Mint debuted the Silver Kookaburra Series in 1990, making it one of the earliest bullion coin collections to highlight wildlife native to Australia. Over the decades, the series has attracted collectors and investors from around the world thanks to its annually changing artwork, dependable production quality, and its celebration of the well-known kookaburra bird. Right now, the 2013 Australian Kookaburra 1 Kilo Silver Coin is available to purchase online from Provident Metals.

The 2013 Australian Kookaburra 1 Kilo Silver Coin represents the largest weight offered in that years lineup and comes housed in a protective plastic capsule. For 2013, the Perth Mint released the Kookaburra design in 1 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kilo sizes. The 1 oz version reached its maximum mintage of 500,000 coins, while the larger sizes did not have set limits for the year. When minting closed, the 10 oz coin recorded sales of 24,481 pieces and the 1 kilo coin finished with a total of 41,911 coins.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2013 Australian Kookaburra Silver Coin features the well-known portrait of Queen Elizabeth II created by Ian Rank-Broadley. This design shows the Queen in right-profile wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Diamond Tiara. Rank-Broadleys effigy appeared on Australian coins from 1999 through 2018 and remains one of the longest-running portraits used in the Kookaburra series. The inscriptions here include ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 30 DOLLARS.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2013 Kookaburra 1 Kilo Silver Coin is a design from artist Natasha Muhl. Her artwork shows two young kookaburras sitting together on a branch of a gum tree with Australian bush flowers visible in the background. The scene is somewhat unusual for the series because it highlights two juvenile birds, while most releases focus on a single adult kookaburra. Inscriptions here include AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA, 2013, 1 KILO 999 SILVER, and the P mint mark.

History

In First Nations traditions, the kookaburra is respected as a totem animal and often viewed as a messenger with spiritual meaning. Its presence can symbolize guidance and connection for the communities and families who hold it sacred. More broadly, the kookaburra is known for its call that resembles laughter and is commonly linked with happiness, optimism, and the promise of better times ahead.
