Prior to 2016, however, the coins were typically available only in two weights of silver and one in gold. The 1 oz silver coin is the longest-running option in the series and has been available since 1999. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase 2012 Somalia Elephant 1 oz Silver Coins online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The African Wildlife Series Elephant coins focus on the African bush elephant, the largest living land mammal in the world today. The bush elephant is the largest of the living members of its species, followed by its cousin the African forest elephant and the Asian elephant in terms of size. The Bavarian State Mint was one of the first mints, after the Chinese Mint, to introduce a bullion coin with new primary design elements each year.
Obverse
Somalias coat of arms is depicted on the obverse of the 2012 Somalia Elephant 1 oz Silver Coin. Inspired by the national flag of Somalia, the coat of arms features a single star on a shield that has a field of horizontal lines behind it in the background. The crowned shield is supported by leopards with inscriptions of Somali Republic, 2012, and 100 Shillings found on this side of the coin.
Reverse
African bush elephants are featured walking in a family unit on the reverse of 2012 Somalia Elephant 1 oz Silver Coins. The elephants in this design are shown in both the foreground and background. In the foreground, there is one elephant standing on a peninsula along a lake as a group of family members walking along the far shore.
History
The series known as the African Wildlife Elephant silver coins started out as the Zambia Elephant Series in 1999. From 1999 to 2003, the collection largely featured 1 oz silver coins. Starting in 2004, the series became known as the Somalia Elephant Series and began to grow to feature other weights and metals, most notably the gold bullion coin.
