Obverse
The inscriptions on the obverse of this coin spell out ELIZABETH II and D G REGINA. The latter is a shortened version of a Latin phrase that translates to By the Grace of God, Queen, indicating a traditional belief in God’s authority in choosing monarchs. At the center of the inscriptions, within a secondary raised border circle, is an image of Queen Elizabeth II. It’s the effigy created by Susanna Blunt that has been used on all circulating Canadian coins since 2003. The image also appears on many commemorative noncirculating coins issued by the Royal Canadian Mint.

Reverse
The reverse image of this coin is a detailed depiction of a polar bear swimming. The bear is swimming on the surface of the water, and the image is likely supposed to represent the bear in the ocean. Polar bears are apt swimmers and are classified as marine mammals because of how long they can remain swimming in the water between land or other surfaces. They’re also on the vulnerable animals list, which means they’re not officially considered endangered but they’re close. The inscriptions on the reverse of the 2012 Canadian $20 Polar Bear Silver Coin include CANADA, 2012, 20 DOLLARS and ARGENT PUR FINE SILVER 9999.

Packaging
The coin comes in a protective plastic flip or a capsule. You can keep the coin in the flip for storage and display to maintain its condition.

History
The Royal Canadian Mint started minting Face Value Collector coins in 2011. It created coins with face values ranging from $20 to $200 and with a wide variety of fan-favorite images, including animals and cartoons. After minting more than 4 million coins in the series, the Royal Canadian Mint decided to stop the program early for economic reasons.
