{{/presale}}The Royal Mint produced the first British Britannia Silver bullion coin in 1998. It is the first silver bullion coin in Europe. From their beginning, the Britannia Silver coins have contained .958 Troy oz of actual silver content and are legal tender. As a result of their high-quality finish and limited mintage, the Britannia Silver bullion coins have retained a higher premium than other silver bullion coins and has made them the most popular silver investment coin in the UK. Currently, Provident Metals has the 2012 British Britannia 1 oz Silver Coin available for purchase.
Highlights:
Obverse
A portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is the obverse of the 2012 British Britannia Silver coin. This is the fourth effigy of Her Majesty, which was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley and introduced in 1998. His design depicts the Queen in a more realistic way – more mature and poised. Inscriptions included are ELIZABETH II, D, G, REG, FID, DEF, and 2 POUNDS.
Reverse
The classic standing Britannia is the reverse of the 2012 British Britannia Silver coin. Created by Philip Nathan, Britannia is portrayed as a beautiful young woman, her hair flowing from under her Corinthian helmet. She is holding a 3-pronged trident in one hand and an olive branch and a shield with the British Union Jack flag in the other. Inscriptions included are BRITANNIA 2012 and ONE OUNCE FINE SILVER.
History
Prior to the early Renaissance, Great Britain was known as Britannia. After becoming known as Great Britain, Britannia became a female incarnation of Great Britain. She first appeared on British coinage in 1672. As a representative of the British feelings of unity, liberty, strength, and integrity, Britannia has appeared regularly on British coins. The design of Britannia that is on the reverse of this 2012 Britannia Silver coin is the most often used version.
