The Australian Platinum Platypus is a special chapter in Perth Mints history with platinum bullion coins. The Platinum Koala came first, starting in 1988 and running until 2000. When Perth Mint restarted its platinum program in 2011, the Platinum Platypus was the featured design. It remained in production until 2018, after which the Platinum Kangaroo made its debut in 2019. Right now, 2012 Australian Platypus 1 oz Platinum Coins are available from Provident Metals.

Inscriptions here read AUSTRALIAN PLATYPUS, 2012, and 1 OZ 9995 PLATINUM.

History

The platypus is one of natures most unusual creatures, offering a glimpse into the early history of mammals that dates back over 100 million years. Found in freshwater areas of eastern Australia and Tasmania, they live in habitats ranging from tropical streams in Queensland to cooler rivers in Tasmania.
