{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The Australian Platinum Platypus is a special chapter in Perth Mints history with platinum bullion coins. The Platinum Koala came first, starting in 1988 and running until 2000. When Perth Mint restarted its platinum program in 2011, the Platinum Platypus was the featured design. It remained in production until 2018, after which the Platinum Kangaroo made its debut in 2019. Right now, 2012 Australian Platypus 1 oz Platinum Coins are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 2012 Australian Platypus 1 oz Platinum Coin comes safely in an acrylic capsule. This years mintage reached 26,580 coins, making it the second-highest total of the series. Only the first release in 2011 surpassed it with 30,000 coins. All later years from 2013 to 2018 saw smaller numbers, with 2015 reaching about half the total of the 2012 issue.
Obverse
The obverse side of the 2012 Australian Platypus Platinum Coin presents the 1998 portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. The design depicts the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The inscriptions here read ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 100 DOLLARS.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2012 Platypus 1 oz Platinum Coin, a platypus is shown swimming below the surface. These animals prefer steady waterways with plenty of food, places to dig burrows, and minimal disturbance from human activity. Inscriptions here read AUSTRALIAN PLATYPUS, 2012, and 1 OZ 9995 PLATINUM.
History
The platypus is one of natures most unusual creatures, offering a glimpse into the early history of mammals that dates back over 100 million years. Found in freshwater areas of eastern Australia and Tasmania, they live in habitats ranging from tropical streams in Queensland to cooler rivers in Tasmania.
