{{/presale}}The 2012 release in the Lunar Series II program from Perth Mint represented the Year of the Dragon. One of the most important creatures in Chinese mythology and folklore, the dragon from this corner of the world is unlike depictions of the beast from European folklore and mythology. Provident Metals now has 2012 Australian Lunar Dragon 5 oz Silver Coins available to you for purchase online.
Highlights:
When you purchase a 2012 Australian Lunar Dragon 5 oz Silver Coin online from Provident Metals, you will receive a coin that comes with individual packaging. The coins in this weight of the series are offered in protective plastic capsules. Perth Mint issued the 5 oz silver coins with an unlimited mintage, striking them from the point of initial release in late 2011 until the point in 2012 that the next design in the series was available. This resulted in a final mintage of 31,664 silver coins in total.
Obverse
The obverse of 2012 Australian Lunar Dragon Silver Coins features an image of Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile portrait depicts the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, with inscriptions on this field that read ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, 5 OZ 999 SILVER, 2012, and 8 DOLLARS.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 2012 Australian Lunar Dragon 5 oz Silver coins is a depiction of the Chinese dragon. The serpent-like beast has a long, slender body with four legs and is shown pursuing the flaming pearl. The field includes the Chinese symbol for a dragon, as well as inscriptions of YEAR OF THE DRAGON and a P mint mark for the Perth Mint.
History
The Year of the Dragon is fifth on the Zodiac. The dragon reportedly arrived sixth to a meeting with the Jade Emperor. However, when the dragon told the Emperor he was delayed because he stopped to create rain for an individual suffering from drought, the Emperor gave him the fifth position.
